THE BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON’S STATEMENT ON RITA JEPTOO

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon is aware of the announcement made today (January 30, 2015) by Athletics Kenya in Nairobi regarding Rita Jeptoo’s failed drug test conducted in September 2014. The Chicago Marathon will await the completion of the process by the IAAF and any appeal by Jeptoo before addressing the athlete’s standing with the event. Jeptoo won the 2013 and 2014 Chicago Marathons.

“The use of drugs and doping in any sport is deeply disappointing to all of us, especially to the athletes who are competing clean and to the fans,” said Carey Pinkowski, Bank of America Chicago Marathon Executive Race Director.  “The Chicago Marathon is determined to uphold the integrity of our sport, and we will continue to work with the Abbott World Marathon Majors who has been very clear that doping will not be tolerated and that athletes who have tested positive will not be allowed to participate in any AWMM events.”

The marathons which comprise the Abbott World Marathon Majors are Boston, Tokyo, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City. Click here to view the Abbott World Marathon Majors statement on today’s announcement.
