WANJIRU, MIKITENKO CLAIM TITLES OF 2008-2009 WORLD MARATHON MAJORS SERIES
Samuel Wanjiru, of Kenya, and Irina Mikitenko, of Germany, are the winners of the 2008-’09 World Marathon Majors series, and both were presented with $500,000 USD for their respective accomplishment at an award ceremony today in New York. Wanjiru collected 90 points over the two-year series, winning at the 2008 Olympics, as well as at London and Chicago in 2009. He was also runner-up at London in 2008. Similarly, Mikitenko won three major marathons and finished second place in another during the last two years; she won at London in both 2008 and 2009, was victorious at Berlin in 2008, and was runner-up at Chicago last month .

WANJIRU BREAKS NORTH AMERICAN AND COURSE RECORD AT THE 32ND RUNNING OF THE BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON
The 32nd running of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon today witnessed 34,792 participants at the start and 33,419 official finishers, a men’s course record, a new female champion, a three-time wheelchair champion and a sprint finish in the women’s wheelchair competition.

BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON EXECUTIVE RACE DIRECTOR CAREY PINKOWSKI CELEBRATES 20 YEARS WITH HONORARY STREET NAMING AT RACE’S GRANT PARK START LINE
To commemorate his 20 years of leadership as the Executive Race Director of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, Carey Pinkowski was recognized today by the City of Chicago and Bank of America with an honorary street naming at the site of the race’s start line. The intersection of Monroe Street and Columbus Drive now bears the name “Carey Pinkowski Drive.”

BANK OF AMERICA AND NIKE DONATE $100,000 TO CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS’ HANSON STADIUM REFURBISHMENT EFFORTS
Bank of America and Nike today announced a $100,000 joint commitment in support of youth running in Chicago, advancing the philanthropic heritage of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Those efforts will begin immediately with the refurbishment of the Chicago Public Schools’ Hanson Stadium which plays host to track & field and football events at both the elementary and high school levels. The announcement was made at a press conference today with City of Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley.

IRISH POLICE IN CHICAGO MARATHON BID FOR CANCER CHARITY
The ‘Great Garda Run 2009’ Team will see 150 Police Officers, from the Irish Police Service (An Garda Síochána) participate in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon on Sunday 11th October 2009 in aid of The Marie Keating Foundation., an Irish Charity, who provide Cancer Awareness and Information to the general Public of Ireland free of charge.

HAM RADIO OPERATORS TO RECYCLE EMERGENCY SKILLS AT THE BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON
ARRL, the national association for Amateur Radio® today announced that volunteers from ARRL’s Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES®) program and other local Amateur Radio groups will be aiding race officials over the Bank of America Chicago Marathon’s course on Sunday, October 11. From both fixed and roving locations the teams of Amateur Radio operators (often called “hams”) will deploy a wireless communication network to pass information as the race unfolds. The hams will be using many of the same skills that they used in providing emergency communications following Hurricanes Katrina and Ike, 9-11 and many other disasters to enhance the communication structure that supports the Chicago Marathon.

VERIZON WIRELESS KEEPS BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON RUNNING
Verizon Wireless, the official wireless sponsor of the 2009 Bank of America Chicago Marathon, announced today that the company will provide its Field Force Manager product and PC cards to the race staff to guarantee crystal clear communication between staff members and to ensure emergency response communication can be organized and communicated clearly. The wireless company will also increase network capacity with the deployment of a temporary portable “cell on wheels” to prepare for the expected influx of simultaneous calls and text messages as thousands of fans and supporters descend upon the city.

LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL RUNNERS TO COMPETE IN NIKE NORTHSIDE/SOUTHSIDE CHALLENGE AT THE BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON
Nike and Bank of America today announced details of the Oct. 11 Nike Northside/Southside Challenge at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. The event marks the first time a World Marathon Major will feature high school athletes competing in an invitational meet, on the race-day course, while the marathon is in progress.

REIGNING WORLD MARATHON MAJORS CHAMPION IRINA MIKITENKO JOINS 2009 BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON FIELD
The Bank of America Chicago Marathon today announced its final roster of elite athletes headlined by reigning World Marathon Majors women’s champion Irina Mikitenko (GER). The female competition also welcomes Japan’s Mizuho Nasukawa, Russia’s Liliya Shobukhova and Romania’s Adriana Pirtea. The men’s field deepened with the additions of Morocco’s Abderrahim Goumri and Kenya’s Vincent Kipruto.

Cheruiyot hopes to become the first person to “four-peat” at the BAA Boston Marathon and Kara Goucher is the American favorite to win the women’s race as Universal Sports presents TV and online coverage of the 2009 World Marathon Majors beginning April 20, with the historic Boston Marathon, the world’s oldest annual marathon. BANK OF AMERICA CHICAGO MARATHON REGISTRATION TO OPEN SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 1
Online registration for the 2009 Bank of America Chicago Marathon will open to the public beginning at midnight (CST) on February 1 at chicagomarathon.com. The 32-year-old 26.2-mile race will be held on Sunday, October 11, beginning and ending in Chicago’s historic Grant Park. Registration is open to the first 45,000 registered participants.
