Start Corrals

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon features a Wave Start and Start Corral process to facilitate a more efficient and convenient race day experience for all participants. This includes three significant details that you should be aware of:

  • There are two separate Start Waves (Wave 1 and Wave 2); Wave 1 starts at 7:30 a.m., followed by Wave 2 at 8:00 a.m.
  • All participants will be assigned to a specific Start Corral (American Development, Corral A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L or M)
  • Participants assigned to Start Corrals A, B, C, D, E and American Development start in Wave 1 at 7:30 a.m.; Participants assigned to Start Corrals F, G, H, J, K, L and M start in Wave 2 at 8:00 a.m.

What is your Start Corral assignment based on?

  • Assignment to the American Development Corral and Start Corrals A, B, C, D, and E are based on submitted proof of a qualifying time.
  • Assignment to Corrals F, G, H, J, K, L and M is based on the expected Chicago Marathon finish time that you must submit when registering for the race.

How to Submit Proof of Qualifying for Corrals A-E:

If you would like to update or change your assignment for Start Corrals A – E, you can do so by submitting a qualifying time. Your qualifying time must have been from a marathon or half-marathon run on or after January 1, 2011. The deadline to submit proof of a qualifying time is Monday, August 26, 2013.

You may submit your qualifying time in one of two ways after you have registered for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon:

Faxed and e-faxed qualifying times may be in the form of:

  • A finisher’s certificate
  • A printout from an online race results page (please circle or underline your name and time) and ensure the race name and date appear on the page

Emailed qualifying times may be sent as:

  • A screen shot of your individual race results inserted in the body of your email (the race name and date must appear along with your results)
  • An attachment in the form of a finisher’s certificate
  • An attached printout from an online race results page (please circle or underline your name and time) and ensure the race name and date appear on the page
  • A link to your individual race results. Please ensure your name and results are the ONLY ones appearing on the page

If you have qualified for a Start Corral based on your results from the 2011 or 2012 Bank of America Chicago Marathon you do NOT need to submit proof of qualification.  However, you must verify the correct corral assignment has been automatically made by viewing the Online Confirmation page.

Start Corrals will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Assignment to a Start Corral is not guaranteed. All participants should verify their corral assignments on the Online Confirmation page.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Start Corrals?
Start Corrals are designated start areas designed to facilitate a more efficient and convenient race start for all participants. Wave 1 Start Corrals American Development, A, B, C, D, and E are assigned based on an accepted qualifying time. Start Wave 2 Corrals F, G, H, J, K, L, and M are assigned based on the expected marathon finish time provided during registration

How can I qualify for a Wave 1 Start Corral?
Start Corrals American Development, A, B, C, D, and E are secure start areas designed to offer a quicker and smoother start for all qualified participants. Assignment to these Start Corrals is based on a submitted qualifying time from a half marathon or marathon performance run on or after January 1, 2011. The deadline to submit proof of qualification is August 26, 2013.

How do I know which Start Corral I have been assigned to?
Once you have registered for the event, you can confirm your Start Corral assignment on the Online Confirmation page. Your Start Corral will be listed next to your name, city, state, age division.

Can I switch from one Start Corral to another?
If you qualify for a “faster” corral, you can be moved up by submitting a “faster” qualifying performance prior to the August 26, 2013 deadline. If you were automatically assigned to a “faster” Start Corral but do not wish to start in that corral, you can be assigned to a later starting Start Corral by submitting a request to startcorrals@chicagomarathon.com.

My friends have been placed into a different Seeded Start Corral.
Can we run together?
If you plan to run with a friend, family member, or teammate, make sure that you both submit the same expected finish times or that you both submit qualifying times for the same Start Corral.

I have been automatically assigned to a Seeded Start Corral. How did this happen?
Some participants are automatically assigned to a Start Corral by virtue of their qualifying performance at the 2011-2012 Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

My Start Corral says “pending” on the confirmation page. What does that mean?
When registering, you selected to start in Corral A, B, C, D, or E but have not yet submitted proof of qualification. You may have the “pending” removed by submitting proof of time to our office. See How to Submit Proof of Qualifying for Corrals A – E for instructions on how to submit proof of time.

I submitted a qualifying time. Will I receive confirmation that my Start Corral has been changed?
No. You will not receive confirmation that your Start Corral has been changed. You must verify the change has been made by viewing your corral assignment on the online registration confirmation page.

What is considered acceptable proof of a qualifying time?
Proof of a qualifying time may be submitted in the form of a finisher’s certificate or printout of an online race results page. If you are sending a printout of an online race results page, please circle or underline your name and finishing time in the results. You need only send the page on which the name and date of the race appear and the page on which your name and finishing time appear, not all pages of results. Links are accepted via email ONLY if the link is to your individual result. Your name and finishing time must be the ONLY result appearing on the web page. Links to general race result pages will NOT be accepted as proof of qualification. Screen shots of individual online race results will be accepted.

Are Start Corrals guaranteed? How many participants are in each Start Corral?
Start Corrals are not guaranteed – they are filled on a first come, first served basis until they reach their respective capacities.

Can I switch from one Start Corral to another on race day?
No, all participants must start in their assigned Start Corral on race day.

Can I run with my friend or teammate who has been assigned to a different Start Corral?
If you plan to run with a friend or teammate, make sure that you both submit the same expected finish times or that you both submit qualifying times for the same Start Corral.

I missed qualifying for a Start Wave 1 Corral by a few seconds. Will you make an exception?
No. Corral qualifying standards are strictly adhered to.
