Updated Policies and Procedures Q&As
My flight does not arrive in Chicago until after the Health & Fitness Expo closes and it will be impossible for me to pick up my Participant Packet in person. What should I do?
We understand that some unavoidable conflicts will occur; if that is the case, please email firstname.lastname@example.org to seek a resolution.
It is inconvenient for me to pick up my Participant Packet at the Health & Fitness Expo/I don’t want to pay for parking at the Expo/My friend or family member will be at the Expo and has offered to pick up my Participant Packet for me/Etc. Can you make an exception?
Except in circumstances where it would be impossible for a participant to pick up his or her own Participant Packet at the Health & Fitness Expo, exceptions to this policy will not be made.
I plan to run with a hydration pack or belt (e.g. CamelBak or Fuel Belt) or a fanny pack. Will this be allowed?
Yes. However, all bags will be subject to bag screening. Only event-issued clear plastic Participant Bags will be accepted at Gear Check.
What if I forget/lose my Participant Bag or it breaks/tears prior to race morning?
Replacement Participant Bags will be available for distribution outside the security checkpoints on race morning.
I do not feel comfortable checking my cell phone, wallet, car keys, etc., in a clear plastic bag. What should I do?
We do not recommend that you check valuables at Gear Check. Please plan accordingly and make the necessary adjustments so that you do not have to check irreplaceable or valuable items. Exceptions to the Gear Check policy will not be made.
I have an early flight and will need to check my luggage at Gear Check. Will this be allowed?
No. Only event-issued clear plastic Participant Bags will be accepted at Gear Check. Exceptions to this policy will not be made. Please make arrangements with your hotel to check your luggage prior to the race.
Will there be long lines at the security checkpoints?
Event management will ensure that the security checkpoints are properly staffed and moving as efficiently as possible throughout race morning. We recommend that you arrive early on race morning (Grant Park opens to participants at 5:30 a.m.), and that you have the proper event-issued Gear Check bag and your bib number fastened and visible on the front of your running attire to make the process go as smoothly as possible.
If you opt not to check gear and will therefore not be carrying a bag, you can access Grant Park through designated express security lanes.
The start of the race will not be delayed due to lines at security checkpoints.
What other items will not be permitted in Grant Park?
All items deemed to be dangerous or inappropriate will be confiscated or denied access at the sole discretion of security personnel.
Those who choose to run in bulky costumes or with props may find those items deemed inappropriate and therefore confiscated or refused entry into Grant Park by security personnel.
In the past I have entered Grant Park from the east off of Lake Shore Drive, or from the north or south off of Columbus Drive. Will this still be possible?
No. The only way to access the race start area in Grant Park will be from the west through one of the four designated security checkpoints off of Michigan Avenue.
Will my friend or family member who is not registered for the race be able to accompany me to the start line or meet me at the finish line?
No. As in years past, general spectators will not have access to the race start and finish areas within Grant Park on race day. We recommend that spectators support runners from elsewhere on the course, and meet runners after the race at the designated Runner Reunite Area in Grant Park. The Post-Race Party/Runner Reunite Area within Grant Park (Butler Field) will open to spectators after 9:00 a.m.
Will spectators be allowed to carry bags into Grant Park?
Yes. However, all bags will be screened by security personnel. Spectator access to Grant Park will be restricted to the Post-Race Party/Runner Reunite Area (Butler Field) only starting at 9 a.m.
Spectators must access this area by entering through one of the designated security and bag screening checkpoints located off of Michigan Avenue.
Spectators are strongly discouraged from carrying bags into Grant Park in order to maintain an efficient flow of pedestrians into the Park.
