Volunteer Guidelines

Rockin VolunteersThank you for signing up as a volunteer with the 2010 Bank of America Chicago Marathon!  We appreciate your commitment to helping us make this year’s race a successful event.  The Chicago Marathon could not take place without the help of all of the volunteers.

To help make this year’s race a memorable experience for everyone, we ask that all volunteers keep in mind the following guidelines:

1. Please arrive on time. Volunteer Group Leaders will inform event volunteers of their arrival times.  All event volunteer race locations must follow their schedules to ensure that they are prepared for their role.

2. Stay alert and listen to the instructions given by your Volunteer Captain and stay alert. Each Volunteer Captain has received specific training on their area’s respective volunteer positions. Please listen carefully to your Captain’s instructions and comply to what they ask you to do. Volunteer and participant safety is our first priority, so we need you to be prepared and aware of your surroundings at all times.

3. If you have any questions or need assistance, contact your nearest Volunteer Captain.

4. Treat all spectators, volunteers and race participants with courtesy and respect. Never block the path of race participants, throw items or argue with participants or other volunteers.

5. Check the weather and dress appropriately. It is important to prepare for the weather if you are volunteering outside, so pack enough to ensure that you will be comfortable for the duration of your scheduled shift.

6. Wear your event volunteer uniform. Your event uniform and credential must be visible at all times so that event officials, participants, spectators and other volunteers can easily identify you as an event volunteer.

7.  Youth under the age of 16 years old. Due to large machinery and crowd control concerns, and for participant and volunteer safety, we ask that youth under the age of 16 do not work or assist event volunteers.

8. Volunteers working with any food and/or liquids. Volunteers must wear gloves at all times, pull long hair back in a secured ponytail, and wash their hands before working and after visits to the restroom if working with any food and/or liquids.

9. Enjoy your time as a volunteer; have fun! You are the reason that race participants love coming back every year!  We highly value your kindness and commitment.

We are excited to have you as a volunteer at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon! Thank you for your support!
